![]() It has been understood for a long time that female lions tend to stay close to the pride in which they were born, while males travel great distances to find new prides. Scientists call this type of analysis, comparing data from the same space at different times, a spatiotemporal study. Curry used DNA extracted from bones, teeth and hides of 143 lions that lived between 1880-1949 to create a historical population data set.īoth population data sets cover the same geographical range from India to Southern Africa where lions are found. Many of those lion remains still reside perfectly preserved in collections around the world. Fortunately, scientists have a way to turn back time. The historical populations, against which they wanted to compare the modern lion DNA, provided more of a challenge. Curry pulled together DNA data from three previously published studies on lions that lived between 1990-2012. There have been several studies on modern lions, so gathering data for the modern populations was straightforward. But that's not the take-home lesson unfortunately, that's not the story we can tell.Ĭurry and Derr started their study with one overarching question: Has the genetic structure of lion populations changed over the last 100 years? ![]() "I really wanted to be able to tell everyone that the management we've been doing for the last 100 years is perfect and to keep doing what we've been doing and everything will be fine. "I was surprised at what we found - surprised and disappointed, because it's not what I wanted to see," Derr said. The research was published in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution. This fragmentation could ultimately have a long-term impact on the genetic health of the iconic species. By comparing the DNA of lions today to lions from 100 years ago, they found that there is clear genetic evidence of recent population fragmentation, which is when groups of a species are isolated from each other.

Overall, a small number of users of these Macs may have a serious need for Big Sur and may be able to endure the slowdowns, but most users will find unaccelerated graphics performance to be simply unacceptable. ![]() First, you need to make sure that the connector is compatible with your specific speaker wire. Finding it terminated with RCA plugs may be a bit of a challenge, but some shops will do this for you or you can buy F-to-RCA adapters for a buck or two each.If you're looking for connectors for your speaker wire, there are a few key things to keep in mind. ![]() It's certainly likely to be much cheaper than RG6. ![]() You don't even need RG59 for the audio, either any decently-shielded audio RCA cables will do fine - although you CAN use RG59 if you can find a bunch of it cheap. pph, and even DVD playback doesn't approach that.) RG59 is just fine at 10 MHz and down. (That would be good for 800 lines horizontal res. But baseband (composite) video, non-HDTV, stops at about 10 MHz at the absolute most. RG-6 is all but required for modern cable TV setups because their bandwidth is well over a GHz and it attenuates those high frequencies a lot less than RG-59, and its leakage is far lower than other cables too. If you want to do this right, you don't even need to splurge on RG-6. Now even if you wire all this up correctly, your audio lines will likely pick up all kinds of AC hum, and the video probably won't be able to sync because it's picking up the same - but with visual effects instead of audible. Even though the shield side of all those RCA jacks may appear to be common, they aren't "close enough" to each other electrically at high frequencies. Don't even think about using a single ground connection for the L and R AND video. You could get away with using a single ground connection for audio L and R, but you still need two separate live signals in addition to the ground. The center conductor of the RCA jack at the source has to go to the center conductor at the destination, and simlarly for the ground. You have to be certain that you don't interchange these. In each case you'd connect one of the wires of the pair to the "live" wire in the RCA, and one to the shield. One each for the video, L audio, and R audio. If you want to try it anyway, you would need THREE runs of speaker wire. It's also the wrong impedance, which is important for video. Especially if you're running tens of feet of cable. The reason zip cord isn't the right thing is that it isn't shielded and these circuits are pretty sensitive to noise. The fact that it's wrapped around the "live" wire, in the form of a braid or foil, performs a second function: It provides shielding against noise pickup by the "live" wire. The shield provides the ground connection back to the signal source. It's connected to that shield you didn't understand the need for. The ground connection provides the return path. You can't just push and pull electrons out and in the "live" connection without having someplace for them to go, or to come from, respectively. It provides the return path for the signal. The "ground" is the shell of the RCA plug. In the RCA jack the center conductor (where the hole is, or the pin on the RCA plug) is the "live" connection. In unbalanced audio and video circuits (which these are) each signal needs its "live" connection and a "neutral" or "ground". I'm afraid you really don't have the beginnings of a clue here. For the audio, can I attach one to each of those two conductors? No. Quote:Originally posted by Noel:ok, then I was using it as a single channel. Any idea what might be going wrong, and what I can do to fix it?Thanks And related to this, how would I do the same with audio? I've got a mini->RCA cable which I was intending to cut up and splice in speaker wire as with the video. Then in the living room I've got it spliced back to an RCA connector and into the TV. I cut that in half (it appears to have a part of it shielded, why?), and spliced it with some speaker wire, both channels mushed into one. Here's what I'm doing:Composite out (through an adapter) on the radeon has an RCA plug going into it. However, it does not appear to be this time. It's a long trip because I can't drill through the wall (it's too thick)So I'm trying to extend it using speaker wire, which I have seen work before. Hey everyone, I tried searching, but since 3 letter 'words' don't work, 'RCA' (the key part of this post) didn't work.So I'm trying to run the TV out on my Radeon 9500pro to the TV in the living room. ![]() Advanced revenue reports: Break down appointments by service or client to identify opportunities to increase your earnings.Complex appointments: Set up repeating appointments or add more clients to an appointment.Payments: Your clients can securely pay online or in person with tap to pay.Appointment deposits: Require a deposit when clients book online to eliminate no-shows.Pro plan - $19.99/month - All the tools you need to grow appointments and manage your business. I deferred to Palahniuk about where we would conduct the interview, and I neglect to ask as we navigate the city Palahniuk adopted as his own six days after graduating high school in 1980, the place teeming, as he wrote in Fugitives and Refugees, with “the most cracked of the crackpots.”Ĭhuck Palahniuk has a more significant literary oeuvre than he’s often given credit for, likely because of an unfair association with toxic masculinity, misogyny, and various other social ills typified by Tyler Durden, the impossibly intoxicating antihero at the center of Palahniuk’s breakthrough debut novel Fight Club. In Palahniuk’s fiction, twisted violence and sex occur in a matter-of-fact manner. By September of that year, Elliotson’s friend Wakley had turned on him, and The Lancet published editorials denouncing mesmerism after the failed testing of two famous patients at Elliotson’s home in Bedford Square in August. 5 This came to a head at a meeting of the Medical Committee of the Hospital in June of 1838, which resulted in a resolution to stop the public demonstrations. 6 This led to some jealousy amongst his peers, and an opposition movement was led by the famous surgeon Robert Liston, who by then was head of surgery at University College Hospital. Elliotson published his results in The Lancet, launching mesmerism into the minds of the nineteenth century British medical establishment.ĭemonstrations were held in the University College Hospital lecture theater, attracting large crowds and some famous visitors, including Michael Faraday and Charles Dickens. While there, he invited yet another practitioner of mesmerism, the French Baron Jules Dupotet, to demonstrate his techniques on patients. In the first edition, Wakley pledged to seek to end “mystery and concealment” in medicine in order to “detect and expose the impositions of ignorant practitioners.” 6 Elliotson’s success came in part from The Lancet publishing his lectures, which led to his appointment as professor at the new University College Hospital. One of Elliotson’s close friends, Thomas Wakley, had started a medical journal called The Lancet just a few years earlier, with the mission to expose and denounce quackery. Thomas Hospital, the results of which were published in the London Medical and Physical Journal. This caught the attention of the English physician John Elliotson, who arranged for Chenevix to try it out on patients in St. In that same year, an Irishman known simply as Chenevix brought mesmerism from Paris to London, where he gave several demonstrations of the technique. She remained in a “mesmeric state” for two days, and upon waking had no recollection of the surgery. The operation took ten to twelve minutes, during which the patient showed no signs of discomfort. While there were reports of mesmerism being used to control pain in a clinical setting, the first reported use of mesmerism in surgery occurred in Paris on April 12, 1829, when the surgeon Jules Cloquet removed a tumor from the breast of a sixty-four-year-old woman, Madame Plantin. 3ĭespite “animal magnetism” being thoroughly discredited in Paris by a Royal Commission set up by King Louis XVI in 1784, 1 its popularity persisted, with a revival occurring in Britain in the 1840s. This was summed up in Mesmer’s statement “there is only one disease and one cure.” 2 By manipulating this secret fluid, Mesmer could put patients in a state of peaceful sedation, which was likely an example of clinical hypnosis. 1 This theory postulated that magnets could control the fluid’s influence on disease, as improper flow or congestion was felt to be the cause of illness. Mesmerism is named after its founder, the Austrian physician Franz Anton Mesmer, who described his theory of “animal magnetism” in the late eighteenth century, claiming that a universal fluid was the determinant of all health. The eminent British surgeon, Robert Liston, after performing the first operation under ether in Europe, made reference to it with his famous line, “This Yankee dodge, gentlemen, beats mesmerism hollow.” But one of the strangest methods had a brief moment of fame in the middle of the nineteenth century, and was in fact in direct competition with ether. However, before that day in October, 1846 in Boston where ether was used publicly for the first time, surgeons did attempt to alleviate the suffering of their patients through a number of ways, including herbal concoctions, alcohol, and opium. ![]() ![]() The modern era of surgery is often thought to have begun with the introduction of ether, allowing surgeons to operate on insensible patients, and do more than ever before. Normally if adults are doing child voices, they would pitch up their voices, but here, Kevin Hart, Thomas Middleton and Jordan Peele use their regular voices and it's just distracting. You would normally expect kids to sound like kids, but in this movie, the kids sound more like adults and it's really bothersome. I'm also not a huge fan of the voice casting in this, mostly with the children. A lot of the humor is derived from toilet humor and as well as it works for this movie in particular, it may drive audiences away. Since the movie does carry the spirit of the books, it also carries the humor, which I personally didn't laugh at many of the jokes, which may turn people off from watching the movie. The movie only seems to have times where you can sink in the moment occasionally, but not very often. ![]() First off, the pacing makes the movie feel like it's going too fast at times. Despite the fact that I think that this is one of Dreamworks's best in a while, it does have some flaws here and there. The animation looks like a 3D version of something that you would see in the books, and just that is enough for me to like the style that the movie was going for.
